How to unstake SOL

Getting staked SOL back is a two-step, two-epoch process — not locked, but not instant either.

Step by step

  1. Step 1Connect walletMust be the stake account's withdraw authority.
  2. Step 2Open Stake SOLYour active stake accounts are listed.
  3. Step 3Click DeactivateSign once. The stake stops earning and begins winding down.
  4. Step 4Wait for the epoch to endDeactivation completes at the next epoch boundary (~2–3 days), not immediately.
  5. Step 5Click WithdrawAppears once the account shows Inactive. Sign to move the SOL back to your wallet.
  6. Step 6SOL is liquid againThe stake account closes and its rent deposit is returned with it.

Why it isn't instant

Solana's stake activation and deactivation are both epoch-boundary events, not per-transaction ones. Deactivating mid-epoch just schedules the stake to go inactive at the end of the current epoch — there's no way to shortcut this at the protocol level.

Partial unstaking

To withdraw only part of a stake, deactivate the full account, then withdraw just the amount you want once it's inactive — the remainder can be re-delegated in a new stake account.

Rewards stop accruing the moment you deactivate, not when the withdrawal completes — there's no benefit to delaying the deactivate step once you've decided to unstake.
