When to use it

Burning takes tokens out of circulation for good: unsold team supply, supply cut after a buyback, spam tokens someone airdropped you, or leftover test tokens. The burn is a public transaction, so anyone can check it in the Transaction Inspector.

What burning does

A burn removes tokens from your token account and lowers the mint's supply by the same amount, in one step. It's the only way to shrink supply: tokens sent to a "dead" address still count in the supply, burned tokens don't.

What you sign

One transaction with a single burn instruction for the amount you entered, from your own token account. No Solstack fee.

After burning

The token account stays open, even at a zero balance, and keeps holding its rent deposit. Close it with Rent Reclaim to get about 0.0015–0.002 SOL back.

Burning vs. revoking

Burning reduces the current supply. Revoking the mint authority prevents anyone from minting more in future. Holders usually expect both; revoke in Token Manager.
